FLIGHT, which stands for “Future Leaders Inspired and Getting a Head Start on Tomorrow,” started last year to allow Gorton seniors who have completed all graduation requirements the ability to graduate in February rather than June, officials said.
The early commencement allows the participants to begin their post-secondary journey early by either earning credits at a local community college or gaining employment to save for upcoming tuition costs.
“FLIGHT is an example of the innovative programs implemented by the District to increase graduation rates and enhance post-secondary readiness,” said Yonkers Board of Education President Dr. Nader J. Sayegh. “The program was piloted last year with much success, and we are eager to honor these graduates today.”
Gorton Principal Gail Joyner-White took part in the graduation celebration.
“FLIGHT steers the seniors who have already completed their graduation requirements away from complacency by providing an opportunity to begin the next chapter of their educational journey,” said Joyner-White.
“All of the FLIGHT students plan to pursue post-secondary study, some beginning immediately and others attending college in the fall,” said Interim Superintendent of Schools Michael Yazurlo. “We celebrate the students today and encourage them to return in June to participate in Gorton’s annual commencement exercises.”
