To the editor:

It’s been an honor and a privilege to have served as a member of the Bedford Central School District Board of Education for the last three years. Our community is full of wonderful people and deserve better than what the School Board has provided.

For most of my three years on the board, I have been a minority voice. It’s because I’ve tried to do what’s right, not what’s popular. As you can imagine, I have met with staunch resistance from several of my Board colleagues who denigrate me for not conforming to the status quo way of doing things even though all the evidence suggests the status quo is not working very well.

Despite our District’s challenges, there is much to be optimistic about, we have amazing students including my daughter who attends Fox Lane High School, we have incredibly dedicated and hardworking teachers and support staff and soon we will have a new superintendent, Dr. Chris Manno. However, the remaining obstacle blocking our District’s ability to regain its footing and thrive is Board leadership, they simply have not gotten the job done.

There has been in our District an unprecedented leadership dynasty going back to 2003, when Susan Wollin was elected to the Board for her first of four terms. Her legacy has been perpetuated by two of her protégés who are now seeking third terms. This 13- year reign of like-minded leadership has been responsible for $58,000,000 of District expenditure increases… more than all budget growth occurring during the District’s first 45 years of existene, hence fiscal crisis.

This leadership dynasty has led us astray and divided as never before and needs to be replaced if we are to blossom as a District once again. On May 17 lets come together and turn the page to a new era of promise by passing the budget and voting in Leadership for a Change by voting for Michelle Brooks, Pam Harney and Mike Solomon.
