Yonkers Mayor Agrees To Landmark Status For Building Housing Mosque

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, who upheld the city's decision to declare landmark status for a mansion planned to be used as a mosque, said the designation means exterior alterations now have to be approved by the city, according to lohud.com.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano upheld a City Council decision to declare the mansion at 20 Grandview Blvd. a landmark, but noted it doesn't affect its use as a mosque, lohud.com reports.

Spano said he found no cause to veto the City Council's approval of the Landmark Preservation Board decision to declare 20 Grandview Blvd. a landmark. The mansion, one of the first houses in the area, was bought last year by the Islamic Community Center of Mid-Westchester, lohud.com reports.

Spano said the landmark status only affects any exterior changes and does not prevent it from being used as a place of worship, lohud.com says.
