YONKERS, N.Y. -- Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer (D-Yonkers) spoke with more than 70 women at an interactive forum on Women In Leadership in Yonkers.

Mayer and the Workforce Development Institute hosted the forum at the Hudson River Museum. Those who attended "learned from women in leadership positions about what it takes to lead and be successful," representatives said in a press release.

"Women in Yonkers and throughout Westchester must have 'seats at the table' as we build our communities and strengthen our economy," said Assemblywoman Mayer. "This important forum provided concrete suggestions as well as an opportunity to share our successes and failures together. As a diverse and strong group of women, we will continue to work together to ensure our voices are heard in every sector of our community."

Executive consultant Ginny Corsi provided information on "the potential to learn from challenges and importance of building personal connections with individuals," according to the release.

"Although women represent fifty one-percent of the population, they hold just 18.5 percent of the seats in the U.S. Congress, 21 percent of the seats in the New York state Legislature, and a mere 4.6 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are women," representatives said. "With attendees employed in fields ranging from teaching to not-for profit management to union organizing, this forum provided aspiring leaders concrete information about how to become more successful in their careers."

State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins also spoke at the forum.

"In New York State, women are 51 percent  of the population, yet we are vastly underrepresented in professional leadership positions," said Stewart-Cousins, (D-Yonkers). head of the Democratic Leadership Conference in the state Senate. "As the first woman in New York State history to lead a legislative conference in Albany, I know firsthand how important it is to bring the voices of women to the table. We are the experts in what we need and we cannot sit on the sidelines and let others speak for us. As women leaders, we must take every opportunity to encourage other women to step up and take on leadership positions in the corporate world, politics, nonprofits and in our communities"
