According to officials, while the Mount Vernon fire department was battling a 9 a.m. blaze at a South Seventh Avenue home, Yonkers relocated several firefighters to Mount Vernon to cover the rest of the city.
During that time, Yonkers fire companies were dispatched and arrived first to help fight a fire on the second floor of a wooden structure located at 471 South 5th Avenue.
Officials said Yonkers companies rescued a woman from her second floor apartment. She was transported to Jacobi Medical Center and is in good condition.
Deputy Chief of Personnel Thomas Fitzpatrick said the rescue of particular importance because it demonstrated fire departments saving more lives via mutual aid.
The department commended Battalion 2, Assistant Chief Christopher Maher, E 313, Ladder 70, Lt. Saponara, Lt. James Halpin, and firefighters O’Connell, Braun, Youshock, Passarelli, Canavan and Rubenstein.
According to officials, the New Rochelle and Pelham Manor fire departments also assisted.
