Yonkers Firefighters Battle Three-Alarm Blaze In Home

This story was updated at 4 p.m.

YONKERS, N.Y. — Yonkers firefighters Wednesday afternoon battled a three-alarm blaze at a three-story house on Crestwood Avenue.

The fire was out by 4 p.m. Firefighters said the house suffered severe fire and smoke damage. The Red Cross was on the scene to help the homeowners relocate. The house next door to the original blaze, at 70 Crestwood Ave., was also damaged when the fire spread to its attic, firefighters said.

Firefighters received a call about the blaze shortly before 2 p.m. The fire engulfed the third floor of the house at 68 Crestwood Ave., and smoke was pouring out of the building more than an hour-and-a-half later.

The family's nanny was home, but she escaped unharmed, said Greg Benedikt, a neighbor and friend of the homeowners. The parents were at work, he said, and their twin children were at school.

"It's disturbing on so many levels to think what people lost and that people could have gotten hurt," said Benedikt, who received a text message from a neighbor about the fire. "It's almost surreal."

At least a half-dozen fire trucks were on the scene along with EMS workers and members of the Yonkers Police Department and Con Edison employees.
