The fire appears to have begun in the rear stairway of the store, said Thomas F. Fitzpatrick Jr., deputy chief of personnel for the Yonkers Fire Department.

The investigation into the blaze is a joint effort between Yonkers Fire and Yonkers Police.

The building, at 371 South Broadway, was being demolished Friday afternoon. That work should be completed sometime Saturday, Fitzpatrick said.

The people living next door to the dollar store have not yet been allowed back to their apartments. The fire and building departments will decide when it is safe for people to return to their homes, Fitzpatrick said.

Several firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze.  The fire took several hours to extinguish. The matter was made more difficult, fire officials said, because of the cold temperatures. However, no hydrants were frozen.
