On Thursday, acting Westchester County District Attorney James McCarty announced that Juan Picart, a 26-year-old Mount Vernon native, was found guilty at trial in coordination to a June shooting last year, where he chased his victim into the East Third Street deli and shot him several times.
At approximately 4 p.m. on June 1 last year, the 28-year-old victim fled into the Top Deli Market after being chased by Picart where he was shot multiple times in in the arms and abdomen in broad daylight. The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition and underwent several hours of surgery to treat the gunshot wounds, while Picart fled until authorities apprehended him on later that month.
The victim survived the gunshot wounds, though the motive for the shooting remains unclear. According to reports, Picart had two previous run-ins with the law, including an attempted robbery and weapons charge. He was on parole for a criminal possession of a weapon charge at the time of the shooting.
Picard was found guilty of felony charges of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and firearm. He is due to be sentenced Tuesday, Aug. 11.
