The fire, which started about 2 p.m. in a multifamily home at 53 Herriot St., quickly spread to the building next door, according to fire officials. High winds fanned the flames, escalating the fire from a two-alarm to a four-alarm very quickly, said News 12.

The Red Cross is helping the five families, including 10 adults and seven children left homeless by the fire, added News 12.
