Close to 250 diverse recruits showed up the first evening for the prep classes -- and the five weeks thereafter, for the Mount Vernon Police exam scheduled at A.B. Davis Middle School on Nov. 14.
Vincent Manzione, a retired Mount Vernon police lieutenant, led the 90-minute sessions, Mondays and Wednesdays, during the months of October and November.
A total of about 1,350 applicants registered to take the exam -- a number that far exceeded expectations; but a reflection of hard work by Detective David Clarke, one of the key contributors to this year’s turnout. Only 10 positions are expected to be filled next year.
“This was a good idea,” said Daniel Nabas, currently a truck driver from Yonkers. He liked “the pace of the classes.” Nabas always wanted to be a policeman. “Now I am feeling pretty good about my chances," he said.
