On Sunday, Nov. 4, police conducted the checkpoint, which was funded by the Governors Traffic Safety Committee and the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation. This is the fifth straight year that the Dutchess County STOP-DWI Program a “Crackdown Enforcement Grant” for the 2017-2018 crackdown periods.
According to police, “the objective of this continued enforcement grant is to revitalize and enhance the visibility of the STOP-DWI Program through coordinated multi-agency impaired driving enforcement details targeting identified statewide crackdown periods. They also include the assignment of certified Drug Recognition Experts to aid in the identification and apprehension of drivers impaired by drugs other than alcohol.”
Local residents charged include:
- Poughkeepsie resident Fernando Bevilacqua, 41, who was charged with DWI with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent;
- Poughkeepsie resident Jose Antonio Lazaro, 56, who was charged with DWI with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent;
- Stony Point resident Robert Kelleher, 41, who was charged with DWI with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent;
- Poughkeepsie resident Darren Davis, Jr., 29, who was charged with criminal possession of marijuana;
- Poughkeepsie resident Shannell Irving, 29, who was charged with DWI;
- Poughkeepsie resident Steven James, 42, who was charged with DWI;
- Louisiana resident Ricky Bardwell, 35, who was charged with DWI with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent;
- Poughkeepsie resident Alexander Smith, 30, who was charged with DWI;
- A 26-year-old Yonkers resident, whose name was not released, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.
“These coordinated, proactive enforcement activities reinforce the commitment of our law enforcement partners to identify, apprehend, and ultimately prosecute those who choose to drive while impaired,” Dutchess County STOP-DWI Coordinator William Johnson stated. “The message is clear, before you go out to celebrate with friends and family have a plan to get home safely, because it’s simply not worth the risks and the consequences are severe.”
