Man Shot To Death On Yonkers Basketball Court

Updated 11 p.m.: YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers police were investigating a fatal shooting Friday night in the Pitkin Park basketball courts, near 95 Locust Hill Ave.

Police said they responded to the park just after 8 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of a shooting. The victim, an unidentified male, was taken to the St. Joseph’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Yonkers police detectives and officers were at the scene Friday night, combing the area for evidence. By 8:30 p.m., they had closed off both ends of Locust Hill Avenue and roped off the basketball courts near Martin Luther King Jr. School.

One neighbor said he saw "six or seven" men shooting dice on the court earlier in the evening. The witness said he heard two gun shots ring out at about 8 p.m. and saw a group of men running from the park.

The neighbor, who did not wish to be identified, said the courts are a common host to dice games.

"It doesn't surprise me that something like this would happen," he said.

This section of Locust Hill Avenue was the site of a July 2010 murder that gained national attention. Down the block from the park, at the Cromwell Towers apartment complex at 77 Locust Hill Ave., Ronnell Jones was one of three men involved in the gang-related double murder of two men.

Jones gained national attention when he avoided arrest for two years by dressing as a woman and earned an appearance on “America’s Most Wanted.” He was arrested in Chicago in June after a traffic stop.
