Acting Westchester County District Attorney James McCarty announced on Thursday that Edwin Palestina, 25, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to felony counts of first-degree attempted murder and manslaughter.
According to McCarty, at approximately 2 a.m. on May 1, 2014, Palestina’s victim was walking on Wordsworth Avenue and Gold Street in Yonkers when two men got out of a minivan and opened fire in what has been described as an “ambush.”
The victim attempted to enter his Yonkers home for safety, but was struck by six bullets, with one fatally striking him in the chest, through his heart and lungs. A witness looking out of his window was also shot at, with a bullet hitting a window guard and grazing his shoulder. The shooters then re-entered the vehicle and fled.
Following an investigation that lasted more than a year, Palestina was arrested by the FBI and Yonkers detectives in Houston, Texas, where he was hiding. He was subsequently remanded to the New York State Department of Corrections before being arraigned and sentenced.
