Samir J. Hattar, 36, Lifelong Yonkers Resident

YONKERS, N.Y. - Samir J. Hattar, a lifelong resident of Yonkers, died Sept. 1. He was 36.

Hattar was born July 17, 1977, in Yonkers, to Miriam Hattar and Farah Ayed Hattar. He graduated from Gorton High School in 1995 where he was an All County football player. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Fordham University and an MSPH with a concentration in biostatistics and epidemiology from the Rockefeller University.

He was the vice president, Mission Budget & Operations at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He had previously served for nearly nine years as a supervisor in the pathology department at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. At LLS he began as associate director of Research in 2008 and was quickly promoted to a director in 2010. He was a long time parishioner and supporter of St. Mary's Good Shepherd Church in Yonkers.

Hattar is survived by his wife, Piera; son, Christian of Yonkers; mother, Miraim Hattar; siblings, Samar Hattar of Yonkers, Irene Jacobson of Purchase, Jacqueline Hattar of Eastchester, Marlene Masiello of the Bronx, Christine Montero of Yorktown, Linda Ciarletta of Eastchester, and Ronald Hattar of Yorktown; his in-laws, Joseph and Margie Bernardini of Yonkers; 14 nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Mike, Jeff, John, Ray, Anthony and Michael; sisters-in-law, Nicole and Julia; many cousins; aunts, uncles; and dear friends. He was predeceased by his father.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Sept. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 at St. Mary's Good Shepherd Church in Yonkers. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Yonkers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Hattar to Christian Hattar or Piera Hattar to provide for Christian's education.
