An investigation into a series of alleged mail theft incidents has been launched in Yonkers.

The Yonkers Police Department and USPS issued an alert on Friday morning announcing that they are investigating incidents of mail theft that have taken place in the city and surrounding municipalities in recent weeks.

Due to the mail theft, police said that residents in Westchester County should review bank and credit statements for signs of fraudulent activity and identity theft. Suspicious activity at or around Yonkers mailboxes should be reported to investigators by calling (914) 377-7900.

Additionally, police said that residents should utilize gel-based pens when writing checks to prevent against check washing. Residents should also be aware of mailbox fishing.

Following several possible mailbox fishing incidents last year, the department issued a series of tips for residents that include:

  • Consider transferring money via other methods;
  • Drop mail containing checks directly at the Post Office or hand it directly to your mail carrier;
  • If you use a mailbox, deposit the mail as close to the scheduled pick-up time as possible;
  • Inspect mailboxes for signs of tampering prior to depositing your mail;
  • When writing a check, use a pen with pigmented ink that cannot be erased;
  • If you see any suspicious activity around mailboxes, call the police.
