Mayor Mike Spano was joined by Yonkers Fire Commissioner Robert Sweeney, Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio and members of the Yonkers Board of Education at Pearls Hawthorne School for the kick-off event.

During this week, the fire department is taking part in a public awareness effort urging residents to “Prevent Kitchen Fires.” This year’s campaign will focus on the dangers of kitchen fires that result from unattended cooking and will spread information on safety measures residents should take to protect their homes and families.

The department also will visit several Yonkers Public Schools during the week with the “Life Safety House” to present students with fire escape techniques. During the visits, students will have the opportunity to tour the house, allowing them to experience actual conditions of a fire.
