YONKERS, N.Y. -- There will be a No Parking Area in place for the funeral of Det. Frank Fernandez Friday, Feb. 19 at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers.

Det. Frank Fernandez was shaved bald at an event to raise money to assist children with cancer. According to the department's Facebook post, this was "something very typical of him to participate in throughout the years."

A large contingent of law enforcement officers, family, and friends are expected to attend the mass.

To allow for the police formation, there will be no parking on Shonnard Place from Park Avenue to Voss Avenue.

Members of the Yonkers Police Department Traffic Division will be posting signs in the area.

The public is asked to avoid this area if possible Friday morning. There will be traffic posts in the concerned area to redirect motorists, said police.

The Yonkers police detective was killed when his SUV collided Sunday, Feb. 14, with a firetruck. Burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson.

Fernandez, who was married with two children, had been with the Police Department for 15 years. He was a “well-respected member” whose “passing is a major loss to the YPD family,” Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said in a previous report in the Daily Voice.

Four firefighters who were on the truck were slightly injured in the crash, which is still under investigation.
