The two cars, a 2012 BMW 650 Convertible and a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera, are on the list of vehicles to be sold by the New York State Office of General Services, along with highway equipment, various vehicles, and other items, said Heather Groll with the Office of General Services.

The BMW, which has 35,924 miles on its odometer, and the Porsche, with approximately 42,010 miles on it, were reported stolen and were recently seized by New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, she said.

The state seized the Porsche after someone tried to register it in 2015, but it turns out the info the person used to try to register it was for a vehicle that is currently registered in the state of Washington by a collector, Groll said.

Police in Washington verified that the vehicle is where it’s supposed to be with its rightful owner.

The vehicle the person tried to register was stolen in 1989 and the VIN was altered. The owner of the stolen Porsche was never found so DMV took possession. It will be sold with a replacement VIN, she added.

The BMW had been left unattended in a New York City parking garage. The garage tried to put a lien on it, but the owner had already collected money after reporting the car stolen.

This isn’t the first time OGS has sold seized items. In 2016, OGS sold a seized Maserati Gran Turismo and BMW X6 following an investigation into a $3.2 million Medicaid fraud case in Brooklyn, Groll said.

In the summer of 2014, several pieces of men’s jewelry and a Rolex were sold on the NYSStore.com eBay site after they were confiscated from a suspected drug trafficker on Staten Island.
