A row of three residential houses were affected, the fire department said, after a fire was started in the middle home.

"Around 12:15 we got a call about smoke in the area from a neighbor and we responded with the first units to a structure fire in the center building," said Yonkers Fire Chief Brian Travers, "Our first truck company got on the roof and cut a hole. They reported a large fire on the top floor. We searched the buildings and got everybody out. Nobody was in grave danger."

A few firemen suffered minor injuries, but no residents were injured.

According to Travers, the fire spread to both neighboring buildings in the attic.

"We had fire in three buildings at once," he said. "That's why we needed the man power. It became a three alarm fire, but we were able to beat it."

However, property damage in all three homes was extensive.

Tamara Garcia-Sanchez, owner of one of the houses, had just sold her house last Friday.

"The lady just signed the papers last week," she said. "I had to call her and tell her what happened."

Carolyn Sherwin of the Red Cross confirmed 17 people in total were displaced.

"We'll be providing them with all of their emergency needs and support. Hopefully some of the families will be able to get in and get some of their clothes and belongings," she said, "We'll be providing emergency lodgings, referrals, and also opening shelter if it is needed."
