The shopping frenzy is a result of a hazardous weather outlook that has been issued by the National Weather Service for Hurricane Sandy. The storm could bring heavy rainfall and high winds throughout New York early next week, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Friday has been very busy, most likely because of storm shoppers, said Mike Pitino, manager of the Stop & Shop at the Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers.
"Our store does everything it can in terms of stocking up on all of the storm essentials, including water, canned goods, firewood, batteries and basically the nonperishable essentials," Pitino said. "The company is reacting to the storm to see what comes next. Despite what happens, the store will remain open. We hardly ever close, because we are a place people can go to in an emergency."
The store is running a stock-up sale that has attracted shoppers from beyond Yonkers, including Robin Grabes, a Manhattan resident.
"I came here because I wanted to make sure I have everything I need to endure the storm," Grabes said. "I've stocked up on seltzer water and some canned goods. I live in an apartment, so I don't have to worry about too much, just stay home and wait it out."
Whenever a big storm like this is coming, people have to be prepared for anything, said Yonkers resident Maryann Perrone.
"I'm really stocking up on everything from cereal to Parmalat milk to be prepared," Perrone said. "I've been living in Yonkers for 45 years, and there's still so much to think about. I always worry about my house and flooding. I just get so hectic whenever a big storm is on its way. I'm going to be inside hoping for the best and expecting the worst."
