Yonkers Police Department Hosts Distracted Driving Course For Young Adults

YONKERS, N.Y. -- The Yonkers Police Department will be hosting a free distracted driving awareness course for young adults every Wednesday afternoon beginning Wednesday, June 18 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The classes will be held at the Yonkers Police Training Unit on 730 East Grassy Sprain Road, Yonkers. Classes will continue through Wednesday, Oct. 22.

The class is open for any drivers between the ages of 16-20 and designed to show teenagers how dangerous distracted driving is.

The class will cover several topics including: 1.) New York state vehicle and traffic laws 2.) Stopping a vehicle; speed and distance 3.) Techniques about accident avoidance 4.) Practical exercises on a driving simulator

Students will be instructed and guided by certified New York State Emergency vehicle operations instructors. The students will be able to use a law enforcement driving simulator designed to provide a dynamic training environment. The driving simulator allows the driver to interact with computer-generated vehicles in a realistic environment, giving students an opportunity to use a cell phone, text or email while driving and see the potential impact their decisions can have in real life.
