“Yonkers on the Move,” a city-wide campaign promoting a healthier lifestyle, will kick-off its first challenge Wednesday at 10 a.m. outside City Hall.

From there, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano will lead walkers on a spring stroll through the downtown to the Yonkers Riverfront Library and back.

“Spring is finally here and what better way to promote healthier living and exercise than to get outside, enjoy the weather and walk with your fellow residents and friends,” Spano said in a statement.

Wednesday’s short walk through the city will also serve as the start of the “Yonkers Walk 20 Challenge.”

In that, participants are encouraged to walk 20 miles by the end of May and given a passport to log their progress. Those who meet their goals will receive special recognition and earn themselves a place in a drawing for various prizes.

City officials said the goal is for Yonkers to log 2,000 miles during the two-month walking season.

And in an effort to liven up some of the resident’s walking hours, “Yonkers on the Move” will host “Holy Yonkers Walk,” Thursday, at 12:45 p.m.

Led by tour guides who will present the history, lore, legends and architecture of the faith-based structures, the walk-tour will showcases the diversity of the community of faith in Yonkers.

Residents who want to participate should meet at Sacred Heart Church on Shonnard Ave, where they will continue to St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church and Chabad Lubavitch of Yonkers.
