YONKERS, N.Y - The Gorton Wolves finally had a chance to celebrate Saturday after rolling to their first victory of the season in a convincing 43-14 victory over Peekskill. The Wolves (1-4) can continue to work toward saving the season this week when they meet crosstown rival Lincoln (1-4) at 1:30 p.m. at Gorton High School.
"I think we're feeling a little more confident with a win," Gorton coach Dan DeMatteo said. "We now have to build on this and take it one game at a time. But we needed a win."
The Wolves were a playoff team last fall and finished with a 6-3 record, but had trouble making plays on both sides of the ball for the first four games of the season. The 43-point output was ignited by running back Jamall Whitaker, who ran for 191 yards and two scores. Jonathan Vasquez returned a punt 41 yards for a touchdown.
Lincoln won its first game of the season over Peekskill, so the two Yonkers teams will battle for a second win this week. The Lancers have been outscored 191-28 and have had difficulty scoring through the last four games.
Gorton is averaging just under 20 points per game and has allowed 32 per game. The Yonkers teams are competitive when playing intra-city games.
