Westchester Legend Elton Brand Retires After 16 Years In NBA

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Peekskill High grad Elton Brand retired Thursday after 16 years in the National Basketball Association.

Brand was the first draft pick of the Chicago Bulls in the 1999 draft. Brand also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks.

Brand was a two-time NBA all-star, but injuries limited his playing time later in his career. He averaged 24.6 points per game for the Clippers in 2005-06, the best of his career. He averaged 11.6 rebounds for the Clippers in 2001-02. For his career, he averaged 16.1 points and 8.6 rebounds.

At Peekskill, Brand averaged 40 points and 20 rebounds per game, and layed AAU basketball with future NBA players Lamar Odom and Ron Artest, and by his senior year he was consistently ranked among the top high school basketball players in the country.

He was selected as New York State Mr. Basketball and helped the team win two state championships. He played in college at Duke, and left after his sophomore season. He was the College Player of the Year as a sophomore, and led Duke to the NCAA Championship game. Connecticut upset the Blue Devils to win the national title.

He established the Elton Brand Foundation in 2000, which provides support to organization where he has lived and played.
