Three Iona Prep Scholar-Athletes Announce College Plans

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Iona Prep athletes from Bronxville, Mahopac and Rye Brook announced that will continue their playing careers in college.

Baseball player Anthony Piccolino, 17, of Bronxville, will attend James Madison University; Dylan Sabia, 17, of Mahopac, will attend Queens College and play baseball while Ryan Telesca, 17, of Rye Brook, will join the crew team at the University of Pennsylvania.

Piccolino has earned the following academic/athletic accolades: National Honor Society Secretary, World Language Honor Society, St. Michael’s College Book Award in Service and Leadership, High Honor Roll and First Honor Roll. Athletic accolades include 2016 CHSAA City Champion, First Team All Hudson Valley, First Team All-State Private/Catholic School, Second Team All CHSAA, Second Team All LoHud, 2 Time Iona Prep Athlete of the Week and CHSAA Player of the Week.

Piccolino is also involved with junior varsity basketball, the Italian Club, Peer Counseling, and is VP of the Student Faculty Council. “First and foremost, I couldn’t have reached the point I am at now without my family and coaches, so I would like to take the time to thank them,'' Piccolino said. "The entire recruiting experience was very humbling and ultimately life-altering. I am thankful for the JMU coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play the highest level of collegiate baseball. I look forward for what’s to come and am excited to begin the real work."

Sabia is part of the Italian club, and is active in his faith with Capuchin Youth & Family Ministry’s Day-by-Day Agape retreat. Sabia will study Law. “It has always been a dream of mine to continue my education and baseball career in college. Queens College is giving me a great opportunity to fulfill my dream and further my education,'' Sabia said.

Sabia’ went 9-2 during the summer season with Evolution Baseball, posting a 2.76 ERA. He was part of Iona Prep’s baseball team, which won the 2016 City Championship.

Telesca will pursue a degree in engineering. He currently rows for RowAmerica Rye and is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society 2016. Telesca went to nationals in a Pair and finished eighth at the Head of the Charles Regatta in the Men’s Varsity 8+ boat. This year, the team came in eighth at Head of the Charles, again, in the same category. His team recently ended the fall season with Gold in the 8+ and silver in the 4+ boats at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.

“This is an opportunity to show everyone what I am made of and to challenge myself with the rigorous athletics and academics at The University of Pennsylvania,” Telesca said.
