Saunders Football Faces Sleepy Hollow In Playoffs

YONKERS, N.Y. – The Saunders High School football team will face second-seeded Sleepy Hollow High School in the first round of the playoffs on Thursday at 3 p.m.

The third-seeded Blue Devils made it into the Section 1 Class A playoffs thanks in part to its season-ending 13-12 win against Port Chester High School.

Quarterback Kristian Prenga ran 17 yards for a touchdown with three minutes left to tie the game at 12 and kicker Eric Mwfodo squeaked the extra point through to lift Saunders to victory. The Blue Devils stopped Port Chester’s final possession to secure the win.

"We didn't want to miss a chance to be in the playoffs," Prenga said. "Defensively we played tough physical football [against Port Chester]. The last defensive stand was a beautiful thing. The way it ended was a great way to enter the playoffs."

The Blue Devils will need all the momentum they can get as they face perhaps the most surprising team in Section 1 this season. Sleepy Hollow has rolled to a 6-1 record this season with the most recent win against rival Ossining High School.

The Horsemen’s offense has been nearly unstoppable recently as the team has averaged 39 points per game in the last four games. Sleepy Hollow also opened the season with a 54-8 drubbing of Riverside (Yonkers) High School.

Saunders’ defense has been strong this season, though, as the Blue Devils have allowed just 11.14 points per game this year. The Blue Devils’ last three opponents have mustered zero, 18 and 12 points and only Brewster High School, in week four, reached the 20-point mark against Saunders.

The Blue Devils must slow down Sleepy Hollow quarterback Devin Lopez, who rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns in the 34-21 win against Ossining. He also threw for 114 yards.
