Yonkers Students Honored For Martin Luther King Essays

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Mayor Mike Spano announced three winners in the Mayor's Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest.

Yonkers students Ray Trayfors (fifth grade, Casimir Pulaski), Karla Garcia (sixth grade, De Hostos School) and Ata Amponsah (senior, Yonkers Middle High School) were the winners. More than 500 students submitted essays.

The students will recite their work at the city’s annual Black History Month Ceremony on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Ceremonial Courtroom of City Hall.
