“While our families were enjoying a well-deserved summer respite, District personnel were working diligently to ready staff and buildings for our students’ arrival,” Superintendent of Schools Bernard Pierorazio said in a statement. “We have high expectations for the 2013-2014 school year and have begun implementing our strategy for student success."
Over the summer, the district’s grant-funded programs helped keep some students involved in unique summer learning opportunities, a press release from the school district said. Some Yonkers high school-level students earned college credit and learned to study in high-level careers through the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program, the release said.
“The summer was certainly not a time of rest for Yonkers Public Schools. We are committed to increasing achievement and college readiness, and these objectives require a year-round focus,” said Board of Education President Dr. Nader J. Sayegh in a press release.
