Yonkers Schools Chief Sets Lofty Academic Goals, Report Says

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers Superintendent of Schools Michael Yazurlo is saddled with trying to dig one of the state's largest school districts out of a massive financial hole, but rebuilding the district's staff isn't his only goal. He hopes to have the school on academic footing similar to that of some of the most successful districts in Westchester County as well, according to LoHud.com.

He's looking to bump graduation rates to 90 percent, up from roughly 76 percent. He also wants all of his students reading at grade-appropriate levels by the third grade, LoHud.com reported.

In order to achieve these goals, Yazurlo knows he needs to rebuild a district that has been ravaged by financial cuts despite a growing student population, LoHud.com said.
