YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers public schools will operate a half-day schedule Friday due to forecasts of inclement weather.
Schools that begin at 7:30 a.m. will be dismissed at 11 a.m., while schools that begin at 8:30 a.m. will end at noon, the district announced Thursday. There will also be no morning or afternoon pre-kindergarten classes.
Transportation will be provided to students who normally receive it, the district said. If weather becomes more severe overnight and requires schools to be closed Friday, parents will be notified by 6:30 a.m., administrators said.
The half-day schedule comes as the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Westchester County and surrounding areas.
Snow is expected to being falling Friday morning after 3 a.m., and is predicted to leave an accumulation of less than one inch. Snow will continue until about noon Friday, forecasters say, then turn to rain. Rain and snow could be heavy at times. New snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are predicted, with icy road conditions.
Snow is expected to fall heavily Friday night after 9 p.m., with forecasts calling for as much as 6 to 10 inches of accumulation.
