The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation grant will help the ANDRUS children’s center renovate its McGee Hall gymnasium. The grant completes a three-year campaign to raise funds to renovate the building, create more usable space and offer newer physical education programs.
The 6,000-square-foot gym is the largest indoor meeting space on ANDRUS’ 107-acre campus. The gym is currently used for indoor sports, school assemblies, large meetings, conferences and concerts. The newly completed renovations include new bleachers, beams, flooring, upgraded lighting and a new climate control system.
This new facility will help the organization in two major ways, said Nancy Woodruff Ment, ANDRUS' CEO.
"McGee Hall really is a center of activity for our children because it's our largest indoor space," said Ment. "When you look at the unpredictable weather we've had, this will ensure us a safe environment for our kids. The second is with our new climate control system. Many of our kids are on medications that require them to be in certain conditions, and now we can control everything for year-round functionality."
Founded in 1928, ANDRUS offers programs to help children and families meet their full potential. Serving Westchester County from 14 locations, ANDRUS’ main site is in North Yonkers, where it offers residential and day treatment for emotionally disturbed children.
ANDRUS has been working hard to complete this project and couldn't have done it without a lot of help, said Ment.
“We are very grateful for the Weinberg Foundation’s support of this project,” said Ment. “They understand the significance of this facility in the lives of our children and their grant is a vote of confidence in our work. With the foundation’s support and the help of our other donors, we have been able to make important improvements in a facility that plays a vital role in the life of our campus."
