Yonkers BOE Approves Inter Municipal Agreement

YONKERS, N.Y. – The Yonkers Board of Education, a nine-member board, recently voted to approve an Inter Municipal Agreement (IMA) with the City of Yonkers.

As of July 1, the city took over control of several departments in the Yonkers Public Schools system, including Chief Administrative Officer, Finance, Legal, Human Resources and Public Information.

Dr. Nader J. Sayegh, BOE president, explained that the 8-0 vote may be misleading. The IMA was actually approved with a 5-4 majority consensus of the individual trustees’ positions. He said there were time constraints in which the city and BOE had to pass their budgets, and that without the IMA, the school district may have had to do layoffs due to financial issues.

“The 8-0 vote was a good-faith act by the trustees to let the mayor and city council know we are prepared to work collaboratively to address the concerns of our stakeholders, create a financially stable district, and move our schools forward,” Sayegh said. “Issues presented by the Civil Service Employee Association, parents and other concerned Yonkers residents, which were presented to the board at the special meeting, will continue to receive the attention and support they deserve. We are relying on all parties involved to engage in an ongoing cooperative effort for the benefit of our students.”
