Darnell Jackson, Marcus Ginyard and Markeith Cummings of the Westchester Knicks spoke to 225 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders about why it is important to eat right and to stay healthy.

Each one of players spoke to the students and then there was a question-and-answer session.

The students wanted to know more about the players. Darnell Jackson told the students that he had played for four years in the NBA.

"The children have been so excited about the Westchester Knicks coming to the school," said Cindy Lopez, principal of the school.

Lopez said it really didn't take very long to arrange for the Westchester Knicks to come to the school.

Mike DeSimone, the school's athletic director, said that the school has instituted Smoothies Fridays. On Fridays, the students have smoothies and the school does not allow sugary drinks. They are trying to teach the students the importance of having a healthy breakfast and how to eat enough throughtout the day.

"The children love the smoothies," DeSimone said.

He explained that the school has volunteers come in on Fridays and help make 300 smoothies in one hour.

"We are trying to teach the importance of nutrition," said DeSimone.
