One person cannot single-handedly change the world, but an idea can. Our Stepinac community has rallied behind an idea that is overlooked in our own communities and around the world.

The problem that has been presented to us is the idea of hunger in our own communities and how we can make an impact on the amount of people who live struggling to find out where their next meal will come from.

Around this time of year, spirits are high about the upcoming Super Bowl so the idea which the Stepinac Family has harped upon the last four years is our “Souper Bowl” can drive.

The can drive has a goal of 25,000 cans, which seems like a formidable task, but when a community rallies behind a common goal it is amazing what can be accomplished.

The reward for reaching our goal is the highly coveted day off after Super Bowl Sunday. While the reward is enticing, it is a reward unto itself impacting the lives of the less fortunate by helping to meet their needs.

My job since the beginning of the food drive has been collecting cans each Wednesday in order to bring them to various food pantries and homeless shelters.

While taking part in this job I have seen the extraordinary measures students have gone to in order to feed the homeless in our own community.

One Wednesday holds a special place in my heart as we made a donation to a food pantry in my hometown of Port Chester. I’m sure everyone has seen people in need in their own towns and neighborhoods but don’t know how to help out.

This was the dilemma I’ve faced over the years, which has eaten away at me. It was one of the greatest moments of my young life finally being able to help people out in my own town.

The smiles on the faces of people who needed a little help in life getting a meal on the table is one of the most beautiful sights anyone can hope to see.
