YONKERS N.Y. - "You are My Sunshine," "This Little Heart of Mine" and "Sing a Rainbow" were just some of the songs Yonkers students sang to senior citizens to spread holiday cheer on Valentine's Day.
Kindergarten students from Yonkers’ Montessori School 31 walked several blocks with their teachers to perform for the residents of Curran Court, a public housing complex for senior citizens, as part of the school's caroling program.
Many residents look forward to these singing events for months in advance, said Currant Court site manager Paula Kubicek.
"The students were here a little while ago for Christmas, and ever since, people have been talking about their performance," said Kubicek.
"It's so wonderful for the residents because it gives them something to look forward to," she said. "The joy of being around children, especially during the holidays, brightens up their spirits. There's really not much more we could ask for - only that they keep coming back."
After the students finished their performance, they delivered homemade Valentine’s Day cards and pens to all of the residents.
Linda Talbot, 70, was one of the volunteers in attendance, and said the students put on a better performance than most professionals do.
"I have gone to a lot of events and seen a lot of performances, but these kids are just precious," said Talbot. "They walk on over, and all seem so excited to be here. Valentine’s Day is a special time of the year, and because many of the people here don't have anybody to spend it with, this event brings everyone together. It's just a great event, and I can't say enough."
Natalie Morales, 6, was one of the many students who performed.
"Singing for the seniors was fun because I saw how much they were all smiling," said Morales. "I like being here and I like singing because it's a good time for everyone. I'm here with my friends and we're all singing Valentine’s Day songs to make the seniors happy. I think they enjoyed it, and that's a good thing to me."
