Yonkers Department of Public Works officials hosted a tour of DPW Service Center and meeting with city officials including Mayor Mike Spano. Having participated in the school’s own green initiative launch in 2012, the Foxfire students learned more about Yonkers’ city-wide sustainable strategies to conserve resources and recycle waste, according to a press release.
“This is a wonderful example of providing students with a global understanding of school-based learning,” said Yonkers Board of Education President Dr. Nader J. Sayegh. “How does what we learn at Foxfire translate to what is going on in the community?”
Superintendent of Schools Michael Yazurlo noted that schools throughout the district have implemented programs to help students become "environmental stewards," according to the release.
“The services provided by the DPW are essential to residents’ daily lives and for the ultimate success of our community," Yazurlo said. "A trip like this enlightens our students to the work the DPW does and infuses within them a respect for the services provided.”
After taking a tour of the facility with Sayegh, the students were welcomed by Yazurlo, Mayor Spano, City Council Education Chair Michael Sabatino, DPW Commissioner Thomas Meier and members of the Yonkers DPW, who displayed equipment from their respective lines of duty.
"During the visit, students also enjoyed face painting and presented their own posters, along with Foxfire t-shirts, to the DPW in celebration of National Public Works Week," representatives said in the release.
“The outing was a great success,” said Foxfire Principal Don Solimene. “It combined experiential learning with a fun field trip; the students haven’t stopped talking about it.”
