Established in 1956, the Teacher of the Year Award honors Yonkers teachers who further excellence. They are selected by a committee comprising members of The Yonkers Kiwanis Club and the Board of Education. Mayor Mike Spano established the Mayor’s Teacher of the Year Awards in 2012 to call attention to Yonkers finest faculty members.

This is the first year that The Yonkers Kiwanis Club, the City of Yonkers and the Yonkers Board of Education have partnered for the annual event.

“Teachers do the most important work in our community and they deserve to be recognized each and every day,” said Spano. “These awards are just an added way to say thank you for positively impacting our children’s lives. It makes sense that we partner with The Yonkers Kiwanis Club and the Board of Education, two organizations that are committed to our children and our community.”

Students, parents, teachers and administrators are encouraged to nominate a teacher. Eligibility requirements for selection to the Teacher of the Year include employment as a teacher in the Yonkers Public Schools for at least five years; demonstration of dedication to the teaching profession which has led his/her students to both knowledge and understanding; initiation of new, meaningful programs for either students, teachers or parents; innovative use of existing programs; and significant community involvement.

“With every school visit I am profoundly impressed by the quality of so many Yonkers teachers. This award is an opportunity for principals, parents, students and staff to herald the profound impact great teachers have on their students,” said Superintendent of Schools Michael Yazurlo.
