More than 100 firefighters from seven departments battled the three-alarm blaze that broke out at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23 at a home on Farnum Boulevard in Franklin Square, fire officials said.
It is unclear what caused the fire, which quickly spread to every floor in the house, destroying it. Firefighters from Franklin Square and Munson, Franklin Square, Elmont, New Hyde Park, Plainview, Hempstead, and West Hempstead all responded to the scene.
Officials said the fire was knocked down in approximately an hour. No injuries were reported.
The community is rallying around the family, and a neighbor has started a GoFundMe fundraising campaign that raised more than $8,000 in just a few hours.
“Havrylkoff family’s home suffered a fire. We would like to raise money to help alleviate some of the burden at this time,” the organizer wrote. “Maryjane Havrylkoff is an important member of this community: both working at Dutchbroadway Elementary School, Averill Park, and for GYO. This family is an integral part of the community and we ask that you choose to give back to a family that has given so much to it.”
