Wilton Students Could Lose April Break

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton’s public schools have already accumulated quite a few closures, and parents are wondering how the students will make up the lost days.

“How about going back to school on Monday only to be off on Tuesday for Election Day again? Weston is sending their kids. It would be nice to hear how Wilton is making similar schedule changes,” Megan McWeeny Morris asked on the Daily Wilton Facebook page.

Board of Education Chairman Gilmore Bray pointed to the revised school calendar, which was revised shortly after Hurricane Irene, when the Wilton schools opened a week later than planned. The calendar found on the school website states that if there are more than three more school closures, time will be taken out of the April vacation.

Currently, after Irene and now the early winter snowstorm, the school system has lost two weeks of classes.

According to state statute the school system has to be open at least 181 days. However, “next week at our Board Of Education meeting we will discuss if changes are required and consider alternatives,” Bray said.

Classes are canceled on Election Day, because the schools are used as polling stations. However students will attend classes on Veterans Day next Thursday.
