Yonkers Polls Running Well, Voter Turnout Big

YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers residents were turning out to the polls in large numbers and, so far, it had been a smooth operation, voters and poll workers said Tuesday afternoon.

Despite reports that the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy was wreaking havoc in places like New York City, Yonkers had apparently been spared from out-of-ordinary glitches.

“We haven’t had any problems,” poll watcher John Kolenda said inside Lincoln High School. “This has been a very quiet polling place.”

Across town, at the Nepperhan Community Center, workers reported similar successes.

“Nepperhan Community Center is open, lots of people are voting, the power is on and we are excited,” the community center’s Facebook account posted to The Yonkers Daily Voice.

At the Enrico Fermi School For The Performing Arts, poll worker Tonya Battle said she saw a constant stream of voters casting their ballot.

“It has been busy all day long,” she said. “We’ve had a really good turnout.”

While  high voter turnout is usually expected in a presidential election year, some poll workers said it may even be higher than 2008, when President Barack Obama was running against John McCain.

“People have strong feelings about Obama and Romney and I think it has energized a lot of people to come out and vote,” Kolenda said.

Yonkers resident Alex Rivera said he didn't have any problems casting his ballot inside Enrico Fermi.

"It was pretty painless," he said. "The lines were short and I got right in and back out again with no problem."

Meanwhile, because Yonkers schools were closed for a week due to Hurricane Sandy, students were in class on Tuesday, a regularly scheduled day off.  Still, poll workers said they saw no disruptions with students and voters.

“The kids were great,” Kolenda said. “Quiet and polite and everybody was very nice.”

Polls will remain open until 9 p.m. Tuesday.
