YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano will host an informational session for volunteers willing to assist seniors with foreclosure prevention.

Yonkers Office for the Aging and Westchester Residential Opportunities scheduled the session for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the Chema Center, 420 Riverdale Ave.

“This is a great opportunity for our residents to assist and support some of our older adults,” Mayor Spano said in a release. “I encourage those who are looking for ways to donate their time to assist with this ever important project.”

Foreclosure rates among seniors have been on the rise in Yonkers, officials said. In 2011 approximately 60 percent of residential lines were sold on properties where the homeowners were 65 or older.

“It is apparent that foreclosures among our aging residents are a growing problem,” Spano said. “We need to be proactive in educating our seniors and their families on how this can be prevented and to better plan for their golden years.”
