City Hall is expanding its social media presence, launching profiles on the blogging site Tumblr, as well as the photo sharing sites Instagram and Flickr, officials said this week.

The city has also launched a problem solver application on its Facebook page for residents to express concerns or issues.

“Advances in social media are long overdue for Yonkers as are the upgrades to the city’s technology structure,” Mayor Mike Spano said in his State of the City address earlier this month.

The newest outreach efforts continue the city’s already existing social media presence on Facebook and Twitter which have been used in various contests, polls, as well as to share news and photos regarding community events.

City officials said the online outlets have been especially useful in emergency situations, including an August water main break and throughout Hurricane Sandy.

The additional online presence is meant to extend the city’s reach, particularly with younger, tech-savvy residents, Spano said.

“We are using technology to bring residents and visitors better and faster information about city services and events, while providing alternate outlets for them to express their needs and concerns,” he said in a statement announcing the launch.
