Mayor Mike Spano announced Monday he was creating the board, a group of up to nine individuals responsible for advising the mayor on issues that affect the quality of life for Hispanics in the City of Yonkers.

“Members of the Hispanic community in Yonkers contribute to the vitality of our City in every facet of life, including government, education, business and more,” Spano said in a statement. “I look forward to meeting, working and developing a forum within Yonkers in which we can develop and decide programs or issues that intricately affect the lives of the City’s fastest growing population.”

Those interested in becoming a board member can submit their resume at www.yonkersny.gov.

The chosen members will be tasked with creating and recommending policies, programs and projects to further Hispanic community development.

According to Spano, roughly 35 percent of the city’s population is Hispanic, including 20 percent of business owners.

Therefore, “it is essential that members of our Hispanic community have a platform to discuss issues of relevance and importance to that community,” he said.

City Council Majority Leader Wilson A. Terrero commended the mayor for the creation of the board and said it will give Hispanics a voice in the city.

“As we move forward together with new visions and goals, I am confident that the esteem members of this board will greatly contribute to and be directly involved to the positive changes and development of the City of Yonkers,” he said.

The selection process of the Yonkers Hispanic Advisory Board is expected to be completed in the coming months.
