YONKERS, N.Y. -- The Northern Westchester Watershed Committee recently passed a resolution seeking $10 million in funds held by Westchester County to divert sewage from Northern Westchester communities to Westchester County’s sewage treatment facility in southwest Yonkers.

Legislator Michael Kaplowitz (D-Somers) sponsored the legislation, later approved by the Westchester County Board of Legislators in 2012. The legislation required $16 million of odor abatement projects to be completed and a long-term countywide sewage treatment plan undertaken, to ensure that communities with county treatment facilities do not have sewage diverted to them from other Westchester municipalities.

The Yonkers sewage treatment plant that the NWWC is hoping to divert its “affluent effluence” to is located in the county legislative district represented by Legislator Virginia Perez (D-Yonkers).

"The upgrades to the sewage plant required by law and promised to Yonkers have not been completed,” noted Legislator and former BOL Chairman Ken Jenkins (D-Yonkers) in a statement. “I am surprised that the Northern Westchester Watershed Committee would pass a resolution seeking the funds while also knowing the upgrades have not been completed by the Astorino administration. In fact, some of the proposed projects that have sat idle for the last four years have since been scrapped."

The BOL started approving bond acts for the Yonkers sewage plant upgrades as early as 2008. In 2010, the BOL overrode an Astorino veto to create a capital project to provide funding for the countywide sewage treatment study.
