Meet State Supreme Court Candidate Noreen Calderin

Calderin is currently a practicing attorney and town justice in New Windsor. She is one of seven candidates vying for three open seats in the 9th Judicial District, which consists of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange and Dutchess counties.

The Daily Voice asked Calderin to fill out a questionnaire with some basic information. Answers were limited to 150 words. Below are her answers.

Family: Married 20 years. Husband retired NYPD; three daughters. First-generation Irish-American father, retired NYC bus driver; mother, homemaker; two sisters, one a nurse and the other a teacher.

Occupation: Town justice, attorney.

What town do you live in: New Windsor.

How long have you lived there: 20 years.

Party affiliation and ballot lines held: Republican, Conservative.

Are you an incumbent: No

Other elected positions held or sought: Town of New Windsor justice.

Civic organizations you belong to: Orange County Magistrates Association, Orange County Bar Association, Women’s Bar Association, NYS Trial Lawyers Association.

Educational background: SUNY Oneonta, St. John's School of Law.

What are the three biggest issues that concern you?

Maintaining Orange County seat, electing competent qualified judges, resolving matters in prompt fashion.

How would you address these issues?

Apply my personal and professional experience and expertise to my campaign and once elected to the bench.

What qualifies you to be a state Supreme Court justice?

My 20-plus years of extensive trial practice plus my experience as a sitting justice in the Town of New Windsor makes me uniquely qualified for the position of Supreme Court justice. I am knowledgeable of the law both as an attorney and as a jurist. I have the temperament and objectivity needed to fulfill the role. I have tried numerous cases to verdict as an advocate for my clients and resolve issues on a daily basis. As a justice I have presided over jury trials and make decisions on matters on a regular basis.

Why should people vote for you?

People should vote for me because I am a strong candidate. I have received support from the community as well as the bar. I have been endorsed by many agencies and associations including the NYS Fraternal Order of Police and the NYS Troopers Association as well as the Affiliated Police Association of Westchester County. I have the experience as both a practicing attorney and a sitting judge to be an excellent Supreme Court justice. I have implemented many policies and programs in my court that have increased our efficiency. I treat all persons with dignity and respect.
