Jenkins Says County Budget Proposal Risks Safety of Yonkers Residents

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- After hearing testimony from the Westchester County Public Safety Department, County Legislator Ken Jenkins (D-Yonkers) charged that the county budget proposal risks the safety of Yonkers residents.

The current proposal cuts three positions and reduces funding for Westchester’s public safety by about $1 million.

Jenkins says the cuts target Yonkers because of political differences with the administration, and include reductions to security at the Yonkers Family Court and domestic violence services provided by My Sister’s Place.

Security was Jenkins’ principal concern during the recent negotiations to relocate the Family Court.

“One in three women are victims of some kind of physical abuse from an intimate partner, and this budget proposal fails those individuals,” Jenkins said. “I know the county’s Budget Committee chair believes that domestic violence is not a real problem in her district, but unfortunately it is in mine and many other places around Westchester.”
