County Legislator From Yonkers May Challenge State Senate Leader In Primary

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Westchester County Legislator Virginia Perez (D-Yonkers) is reportedly considering running as an Independent Democrat in a primary against State Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers), according to a LoHud.com report.

The Independent Democratic Conference has five members in the state senate and share control of the 63-member legislative branch with state Republicans.

State Sen. Tony Avella (D-Queens) left the Democratic Party last week and joined the Independent Democratic Conference, according to the article.

Perez, first elected in 2011, is reportedly a supporter of bi-partisan coalitions.
