Constitutional Convention Fails In New York, Pension Forfeiture Passes

New Yorkers overwhelmingly opposed calling a Constitutional Convention, 78 percent to 16 percent. The ballot measure was opposed by labor groups, politicians and numerous organizations on both the left and the right. A constitutional convention will again be on the ballot in 2037.

In Westchester, the ballot measure failed 75 percent to 18 percent. In Putnam, it failed 86 percent to 12 percent, while Dutchess voters said no 82 percent to 14 percent. In Rockland, the measure failed, 75 percent to 11 percent and in Orange, it failed 84 percent to 10 percent.

New Yorkers did support a proposal allowing judges to reduce or revoke the state pensions of a politician convicted of a felony related to their duties. The measure passed, 67 percent to 25 percent.

In Westchester, the measure passed 67 percent to 25 percent. In Putnam, it passed 70 percent to 26 percent, while Dutchess voters said yes, 74 percent to 21 percent. In Rockland, the measure passed, 58 percent to 25 percent, and in Orange, it passed, 58 percent to 33 percent.

“I am very pleased that New Yorkers have voted with such high margins in favor of Proposal 2," Assemblyman David Buchwald (D-White Plains) said. "Residents of the Empire State have overwhelmingly shown that they are tired of businesses as usual corruption in Albany and have sent a clear message to state officials that we should no longer tolerate abuses of office."

A proposal to allow upstate communities to use forest preserves for infrastructure improvements also passed, 47 percent to 43 percent.

In Westchester, the measure passed 53 percent to 36 percent. In Putnam, it passed 49 percent to 46 percent, while Dutchess voters said yes, 53 percent to 40 percent. In Rockland, the measure failed 44 percent to 37 percent, and in Orange, it passed 45 percent to 44 percent.
