Officers William Celestino and Gabriel Barahona of the 3rd Precinct received the honors.

These two men continue to undergo rehabilitation treatment following a previous incident that almost caused them their lives.

In September 2012, both officers were on patrol in a marked vehicle during a midnight shift, when they heard over the radio that YPD units were following a vehicle being operated in a reckless manner on the wrong side of the roadway.

In the area of 104 S. Broadway, the suspect vehicle was travelling southbound in the northbound lane and subsequently struck the marked unit occupied by Barahona and Celestino.

The driver of the suspect vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both officers received life-threatening injuries and had to be removed from their vehicle by responding officers and medical personnel. They were both transported to a local trauma center.

During a November 2014 ceremony at City Hall, Celestino was designated a detective, and Barahona was promoted to sergeant. Spano gave the Oath of Office, and Gardner singled out these two members of the department for their sacrifice and dedication to the Yonkers Police Department.
