The Yonkers Police Department issued an alert on Wednesday following two separate incidents involving mailboxes located at the corner of Grandview Blvd. and Underhill St. and Alta Vista Drive and Alpine Road, both in the 1st precinct.
Police said that residents who may have recently used those mailboxes have been encouraged to check their bank and credit accounts for any signs of fraudulent or suspicious activities. Any suspicious behavior should be reported to their financial institution and the Yonkers Police Department by calling (914) 377-7900.
The Post Office has been made aware of the incidents and is also investigating and cleaning the mailboxes, Yonkers Police Sgt. Dean Politopoulos noted. Residents have also been asked to alert police if they see any suspicious suspects lurking near mailboxes.
Following the possible mailbox fishing incidents, the department issued a series of tips for residents that include:
- Consider transferring money via other methods;
- Drop mail containing checks directly at the Post Office or hand it directly to your mail carrier;
- If you use a mailbox, deposit the mail as close to the scheduled pick-up time as possible;
- Inspect mailboxes for signs of tampering prior to depositing your mail;
- When writing a check, use a pen with pigmented ink that cannot be erased;
- If you see any suspicious activity around mailboxes, call the police.
